Villa del Balbianello — visit guide

5 min read·July 1, 2026

Villa del Balbianello, decoded

Villa del Balbianello sits on its own wooded promontory jutting into Lake Como, its terraced gardens and loggia framing one of the lake's most complete panoramas — a view familiar even to those who have never visited, thanks to its repeated use as a film location. Managed today by the FAI (Italy's national trust), the villa is reachable only by boat or a short woodland walk, which keeps it feeling genuinely apart from the shoreline villages around it.

Por qué alojarse aquí

  • ●A short boat crossing from Tremezzo, Menaggio or Bellagio puts you at the villa within 20–30 minutes.
  • ●The terraced gardens offer the lake's most photographed viewpoint, framed by mountains on both shores.
  • ●Easily paired with a half-day in Bellagio via the connecting lake ferry.

Getting to the villa

The most direct route is a short boat crossing from Lenno or Sala Comacina, timed to the villa's opening hours. Alternatively, a roughly 20-minute woodland footpath from Lenno's village centre reaches the promontory on foot, for those who'd rather walk than wait for a boat.

The gardens and terraces

The terraced gardens step down toward the water in a sequence of clipped hedges, statuary and loggias, with the lake and surrounding mountains visible from nearly every level. The villa's interior, open on a guided-tour basis only, holds the collections of its last private owner, explorer Guido Monzino.
“Reachable only by boat or footpath, Villa del Balbianello feels like Lake Como's private garden — because for centuries, it was.”

Pairing with Bellagio

Bellagio's promontory village is a short ferry ride from Lenno, making it easy to combine both in a single half-day — the villa's gardens in the morning, lunch and shopping in Bellagio in the afternoon.
