Where to stay in Nice

Nice — the Riviera's central, walkable base

Nice is the Riviera's only genuine city — a working airport 20 minutes from the centre, a tram network, year-round residents, and prices roughly half of Monaco or Cannes for an equivalent room. It sits at the coast's geographic centre: Monaco 30 minutes east, Cannes 45 minutes west, Èze 20 minutes, all reachable by the cheap coastal train. For most first-time Riviera travelers, it's the smartest single base.

Promenade des Anglais vs Old Town

The Promenade holds the Negresco, Anantara Plaza and Hyatt Regency, all facing the Baie des Anges with easy tram and airport access. The Old Town, five minutes inland, trades sea view for atmosphere — La Pérouse sits cliffside above it, and Le Méridien and Aston La Scala split the difference a block or two back from the water.

Why Nice works as a hub

Nice Côte d'Azur (NCE) is France's third-busiest airport and the Riviera's only major one — 20 minutes from central Nice, 30 from Monaco, 45 from Cannes by car, or a helicopter transfer to Monaco in 7 minutes. The coastal train (TER) links Menton–Monaco–Nice–Antibes–Cannes cheaply, making Nice the base that lets you day-trip the whole coast without renting a car.
“Nice's airport and central position make it the only Riviera base that lets you day-trip the whole coast without repacking.”

What to see from a Nice base

The Old Town's Cours Saleya flower market and socca stalls, Castle Hill's viewpoint over the bay, and easy day trips to Èze (20 min), Monaco (30 min), and Cannes (45 min) all radiate from a Nice hotel.

Qué hay cerca

  • Promenade des Anglais—On site
  • Old Town (Vieux Nice)—5 min walk
  • Èze village—20 min by car
  • Monaco—30 min by car/train
  • Cannes—45 min by car/train

Cómo moverse

Nice Côte d'Azur (NCE) airport is 20 min from the centre by tram or taxi. The coastal train (TER) reaches Monaco, Menton, Antibes and Cannes cheaply. A car helps for Èze and the Caps.

Cuándo visitar

April–June and September–October give the best weather-to-crowd balance. July–August is hot and fully booked; February brings Nice Carnival.

Preguntas frecuentes

Is Nice a good base for a first Riviera trip?

+

Yes — it's central, has the only major Riviera airport, and costs roughly half of Monaco or Cannes for an equivalent room.

How far is Nice from Monaco and Cannes?

+

Monaco is 30 minutes by car or coastal train; Cannes is 45 minutes. Both are easy half-day trips.

Do I need a car in Nice?

+

No for the city itself — walking and the tram cover it. A car helps if you want to explore Èze, Cap-Ferrat or the Caps independently.

When is Nice Carnival?

+

February each year — one of the Riviera's biggest winter events, drawing crowds even in the cooler off-season.
