Getting to the Riviera

Getting to the Riviera

Fly into Nice Côte d’Azur (NCE) — France’s third-busiest airport, 20 min from central Nice, 30 from Monaco, 45 from Cannes. Helicopter transfers to Monaco run 7 minutes. The coastal train links Menton–Monaco–Nice–Antibes–Cannes cheaply; a car helps for the Caps and Saint-Tropez.

Common questions

FAQ about the French Riviera

When is the best time to visit the French Riviera?+

May, June, September and October are the sweet spots — warm, swimmable, and less crowded than peak. Note that Cannes Film Festival (mid-May) and the Monaco Grand Prix (late May) spike prices on those exact dates. July–August are the hottest and busiest.

How do I get from Nice airport to Monaco?+

Nice Côte d’Azur (NCE) is about 30 minutes from Monaco by car or pre-booked transfer, or roughly 7 minutes by helicopter. The coastal train and an express bus also connect the airport to the principality.

Do I need a passport or visa for Monaco?+

Monaco has no border formalities coming from France — you pass freely. Standard Schengen entry rules apply for your arrival into France.

Which Riviera town is best for a first visit?+

Nice is the ideal base — walkable, well-connected by the coastal train, and central to easy day trips to Monaco, Èze, Antibes and Cannes.

Are the beaches free or paid?+

Both. Public beaches are free; private beach clubs charge for loungers and service (roughly €30–120/day) and are the scene in Cannes, Saint-Tropez and Monaco.

What’s the difference between Cannes and Saint-Tropez?+

Cannes is a walkable town of Belle Époque palaces along La Croisette. Saint-Tropez is a smaller fishing village turned beach-club capital, about 90 minutes west and best reached by car or yacht.

Which hotels are the five-star icons?+

The Negresco (Nice), the Carlton and Martinez (Cannes), Hôtel de Paris and Hermitage (Monaco), the Grand-Hôtel du Cap-Ferrat (Four Seasons), Château de la Chèvre d’Or (Èze), and the Byblos (Saint-Tropez).

Can TheTravelClub arrange transfers and yachts?+

Yes — airport and helicopter transfers, private drivers, and day-yacht charters can be bundled with your stay. Ask during booking.

About the French Riviera

Where the Alps meet the Mediterranean

The French Riviera — the Côte d’Azur — is where the Maritime Alps drop straight into a turquoise Mediterranean, and where a century of artists, aristocrats and film stars built the template for the luxury seaside holiday. Nice anchors the coast: a real city with an airport, a Belle Époque promenade, and an Old Town of ochre facades and socca stalls.

West of Nice lie the glamour capitals — Cannes with its palm-lined Croisette and palace hotels, and Antibes with its wooded cape. Ninety minutes further, Saint-Tropez trades grandeur for a fishing-village scale that the beach-club set has never let go of.

East of Nice, the Corniche roads climb past Villefranche and the peninsula of Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat — quiet, green, and five-star — to the medieval clifftop village of Èze, and on to Monaco. The principality is its own country: two square kilometres of Monte-Carlo palaces, the Casino, the harbour, and the Grand Prix circuit that turns its streets into a racetrack each May.

For travelers from the U.S., U.K. and beyond, the Riviera offers a rare density: five distinct scenes — Nice, Monaco, Cannes, Saint-Tropez and the Caps — within an hour’s drive, all served by a single airport. Our 23 curated hotels span the palaces and the boutique hideaways, organized by which Riviera you’re here for.
