Casino de Monte-Carlo — visit guide

5 min read·July 1, 2026

Casino de Monte-Carlo, decoded

The Casino de Monte-Carlo, opened in 1863, is the building that gave Monaco its identity — an ornate Belle Époque hall of gilded gaming rooms fronted by manicured gardens and a fountain-lined square. It sits at the physical and symbolic centre of Monte-Carlo, with the Hôtel de Paris on one side and the Café de Paris on the other, and it remains walkable from every hotel in the principality.

Inside the Casino

The public gaming rooms (European Rooms) are open to visitors for a small entry fee even if you don't intend to play; the ornate Salle Garnier opera house shares the same building. The exclusive Salons Privés require a jacket and higher stakes. Photography is restricted inside the gaming rooms — the exterior and gardens are unrestricted.

The Place du Casino

The square in front is as much the attraction as the building — manicured gardens, the Café de Paris terrace, and a rotating display of supercars parked outside. It's the Riviera's most photographed piece of architecture after the Promenade des Anglais.
“You don't need to gamble to visit — the Casino's public rooms, gardens and supercar-lined square are the point.”

Dress code and practical visit

Smart-casual applies after 8 PM in the European gaming rooms; a jacket is mandatory for the Salons Privés, and photo ID (18+) is required to enter any gaming area. Daytime visits to the gardens and exterior have no dress requirement.
