Insider Tips for Hoyo Azul

Arrive early. Scape Park opens at 9:00 AM; heading straight to Hoyo Azul first guarantees you can swim and take photos before the tourist buses arrive.

The best sunlight for photography is between 11:30 AM and 1:30 PM, when the sun is directly overhead and illuminates the neon-blue color of the water.

Wear comfortable walking shoes or sneakers for the hike. Sandals or flip-flops can be slippery on the wet wooden stairs.

Bring water-shoes for inside the cenote if you want extra grip on the submerged stairs.

Locker rentals are available at the main entrance. You cannot bring large backpacks or loose items onto the cenote platform for safety reasons.

Can you swim in Hoyo Azul?

Yes! Swimming is permitted and highly recommended. The fresh water is cool (around 22°C/72°F), which is extremely refreshing compared to the hot tropical weather. Life jackets are provided and mandatory for all swimmers.

How hard is the hike to Hoyo Azul?

The hike is moderate. It takes about 15 to 20 minutes from the park center. The path is well-maintained but includes a suspension bridge and a steep descent down wooden stairs, which may be challenging for those with mobility issues.
