Visiting the Colosseum
A combined ticket covers the Colosseum, Forum and Palatine Hill and is valid across both sites for a set window — book the timed entry ahead online, since walk-up lines regularly run over an hour in peak season. An arena-floor upgrade puts you where the gladiators stood, looking out over the underground chambers (the hypogeum) that once raised animals and fighters into the ring.
The Roman Forum and Palatine Hill
The Forum, just below the Colosseum, was ancient Rome's political and commercial centre — temple columns, the Senate house, and the Via Sacra processional road are all still walkable among the ruins. Palatine Hill above it held the emperors' palaces and gives the best overview panorama of the Forum below.

Best time to visit
Arrive at opening time (around 8:30 AM) or in the last two hours before closing for the thinnest crowds and the softest light on the stonework. Summer afternoons are hot with little shade across the site — carry water and a hat if visiting midday.
