Samaná humpback whales — visit guide

6 min read·June 5, 2026

When and how to see Samaná's humpback whales

Each year between January 15 and March 25, approximately 1,500–2,000 North Atlantic humpback whales migrate to Samaná Bay on the DR's northeastern coast to breed and birth their calves. The bay is one of the world's most reliable whale-watching destinations — sightings are essentially guaranteed during the season, often within 30 min of leaving harbor.

What you see and when

Humpback whales arrive in waves from December through January, peak in February, and depart by late March. Best two weeks: Feb 1–15 — densest population, calmest seas. Tours run from Samaná town pier (Bahia Príncipe operates the largest fleet). Typical sighting: breach, tail slap, fin slap, mother-calf pairs visible above and below water.

Boat tour logistics

3–4 hour boat tour, $60–90 USD per person, departs 9 AM and 1 PM during season. Most boats hold 25–40 passengers with covered cabin. Pre-book by Dec 15 — peak weeks (mid-Feb) sell out 60 days in advance. Sea-sickness pills recommended if you're prone.

Pair with Cayo Levantado

Most travelers pair whale-watching with a stay at Cayo Levantado Resort — the private-island premium resort 15 min by boat from Samaná town. The resort runs daily whale tours during season; sightings sometimes visible from the resort beach itself.

Frequently asked questions

Are sightings guaranteed?

+

Essentially yes during Jan 15 – Mar 25. Reputable operators offer a free re-trip if you don't see whales — almost never invoked during peak weeks.

Can I see them from shore?

+

Sometimes from Cayo Levantado's resort beach during peak weeks. Sightings are clearer and longer from the boat tours.

Is the boat tour kid-friendly?

+

Yes for kids 5+. Younger kids can struggle with the 3–4 hour duration.

What if I'm prone to sea-sickness?

+

Take a pill 1 hour before departure. Samaná Bay is sheltered — seas are calmer than open Atlantic.
