Where to stay in Rome

9 min read·July 1, 2026

Rome — the ancient city's two central bases

Rome layers three thousand years of history into one walkable historic centre — the ancient Forum and Colosseum, Baroque piazzas and fountains, and rooftop bars looking out over all of it at once. The city's two classic hotel bases sit a short walk apart: the top of the Spanish Steps for old-world grandeur, and Via Nazionale for a central, well-connected alternative closer to the ancient sites.

Ideal für

  • ✓First-time Rome visitors wanting the classic historic-centre base
  • ✓Travelers pairing ancient sites with Baroque piazzas and rooftop dining
  • ✓Anyone continuing on to Florence or Venice by high-speed train

Warum hier übernachten

  • ●Both bases put the Spanish Steps, Trevi Fountain and Colosseum within a comfortable walk or short taxi ride.
  • ●Rooftop terraces near both areas offer the classic golden-hour view over Rome's domes and rooftops.
  • ●Rome's high-speed rail station (Termini) connects onward to Florence and Venice in about two hours each.

Spanish Steps vs Via Nazionale

Hotel Hassler Roma and The St. Regis Rome both anchor the more grand, historic corner of the centre — the Hassler directly atop the Spanish Steps, the St. Regis a Belle Époque palace near the Quirinale. Hotel Artemide, on Via Nazionale, offers a more central, practical base within easy walking distance of both the Trevi Fountain and the Colosseum.

Rooftop terraces and the ancient core

Rome's rooftop bars — many attached to hotels near the Spanish Steps and Via Nazionale — offer sweeping views over the terracotta rooftops and domes that define the skyline, best visited at golden hour. The Colosseum, Forum and Palatine Hill sit a 15–20 minute walk or short taxi ride from either base.
“Rome rewards a rooftop at golden hour as much as a morning at the Colosseum — plan for both.”

Getting around Rome

The historic centre is largely walkable; the metro (Line B for the Colosseum) covers longer hops efficiently. Fiumicino (FCO) airport connects to the centre via the Leonardo Express train (about 30 minutes) or a car transfer (about 45 minutes).

Was ist in der Nähe

  • Colosseum & Roman Forum—15–20 min
  • Spanish Steps—Walking
  • Trevi Fountain—10 min walk
  • Florence—1.5 hr by train

Fortbewegung vor Ort

Largely walkable within the historic centre; metro Line B reaches the Colosseum directly. Fiumicino (FCO) airport connects via the Leonardo Express train (~30 min) or car (~45 min).
