The Colosseum & Roman Forum — visit guide

6 min read·July 1, 2026

The Colosseum and Roman Forum, decoded

The Colosseum has stood at the centre of Rome for nearly two thousand years — the largest amphitheater ever built, and still the single image most travelers picture when they picture Italy. It sits directly beside the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill, the government and residential core of ancient Rome, so a single ticket and a single morning can carry you from gladiatorial arena to senate house to the emperors' private hilltop in under three hours.

Warum hier übernachten

  • ●Both Hassler-area and Via Nazionale hotels put the Colosseum within a 15–20 minute walk or a short taxi ride.
  • ●The combined ticket covers three major sites — the Colosseum, Forum and Palatine Hill — in one visit.
  • ●Golden-hour light on the amphitheater's stonework is one of Rome's signature photo moments.

Visiting the Colosseum

A combined ticket covers the Colosseum, Forum and Palatine Hill and is valid across both sites for a set window — book the timed entry ahead online, since walk-up lines regularly run over an hour in peak season. An arena-floor upgrade puts you where the gladiators stood, looking out over the underground chambers (the hypogeum) that once raised animals and fighters into the ring.

The Roman Forum and Palatine Hill

The Forum, just below the Colosseum, was ancient Rome's political and commercial centre — temple columns, the Senate house, and the Via Sacra processional road are all still walkable among the ruins. Palatine Hill above it held the emperors' palaces and gives the best overview panorama of the Forum below.
“One ticket, one morning — the Colosseum, the Forum and Palatine Hill cover nearly a thousand years of Roman history end to end.”

Best time to visit

Arrive at opening time (around 8:30 AM) or in the last two hours before closing for the thinnest crowds and the softest light on the stonework. Summer afternoons are hot with little shade across the site — carry water and a hat if visiting midday.
