Lake Como decoded — villas, ferries and the lake's grand hotels

Three hours north of the Amalfi Coast, Lake Como bends between Alpine foothills in a shape early cartographers likened to an inverted Y — its shoreline lined with the villa gardens that have drawn European aristocracy for four centuries. This is Italy's most theatrical stretch of still water: Grand Hotel Tremezzo's pool cantilevered out over the surface, Passalacqua crowned the world's best hotel in recent rankings, and Bellagio's promontory marking the point where the lake's three arms meet.

Tremezzo, Blevio, Moltrasio and Menaggio

Grand Hotel Tremezzo, in the village of the same name, is the lake's most photographed address, its floating pool suspended directly over the water opposite Bellagio. Mandarin Oriental, Lago di Como, in the quieter village of Blevio, and Passalacqua, a few minutes further at Moltrasio, both trade Tremezzo's central-lake bustle for a more secluded shoreline. Grand Hotel Victoria in Menaggio rounds out the lineup with a spa-led stay on the lake's western shore.

Getting to the lake

Fly into Milan (MXP or LIN), then it's roughly one hour by car or train to Como town, followed by a lake ferry or pre-arranged hotel transfer to Tremezzo, Bellagio, Blevio or Menaggio. Most visitors skip driving the shoreline roads altogether in favor of the ferry — slower point-to-point, but the classic way to arrive.
“Como's villa hotels are built to be seen from the water — arriving by ferry is part of the experience, not just the transport.”

Life on the water

Bellagio's promontory, reachable by ferry from any shoreline hotel, is the lake's postcard village — steep stone staircases, lakefront cafés, and boutique shopping. Nearby, Villa del Balbianello's terraced gardens on its own wooded promontory are the single most photographed private garden on the lake. Como hotels typically close from November to March, reopening as the lake season builds through spring.

Häufig gestellte Fragen

How far is Lake Como from Milan?

+

About one hour by car or train from Milan to Como town, then a lake ferry or hotel transfer to Tremezzo, Bellagio, Blevio or Menaggio.

Which Lake Como hotel should I pick?

+

Grand Hotel Tremezzo for the classic floating-pool, central-lake stay; Mandarin Oriental or Passalacqua for a quieter, more secluded shoreline; Grand Hotel Victoria for a spa-led stay in Menaggio.

Are Lake Como hotels open year-round?

+

Most close from November to March. The season builds through spring and peaks May through September.

Do I need a car around the lake?

Not really — ferries connect the shoreline villages, and most hotels arrange private boat transfers. A car helps only if you plan to explore inland villages away from the water.

What's the best day trip on the lake?

+

Bellagio's promontory village and Villa del Balbianello's terraced gardens, both reachable by boat from any shoreline hotel.
