Monte-Carlo grand luxe

9 min read·July 1, 2026

Monaco — the Riviera's grand-luxe principality

Monaco is its own country — two square kilometers wedged between the Maritime Alps and the Mediterranean, with no border formalities from France. Within that footprint sits Monte-Carlo's Belle Époque palace district: the Casino, the Place du Casino gardens, superyachts stacked in the harbour, and streets that host the Formula 1 Grand Prix each May. It is the Riviera's most concentrated dose of grand luxe, and the five hotels here — from the Hôtel de Paris to the Fairmont's hairpin-view rooms — sit within a ten-minute walk of the Casino square.

Hôtel de Paris vs Hermitage vs Monte-Carlo Bay

Hôtel de Paris is the legendary address directly on the Casino square, connected by a private tunnel to the Thermes Marins spa. The Hermitage shares the same Belle Époque pedigree with a glass-domed Winter Garden restaurant, a few steps away. Monte-Carlo Bay trades the historic square for a modern lagoon-pool resort setting a short shuttle from the centre — better for families and pool days. Fairmont Monte Carlo overlooks the Grand Prix's famous hairpin turn, and Le Méridien Beach Plaza is the principality's only true private-beach hotel.

The Casino and the Grand Prix

The Casino de Monte-Carlo — Belle Époque gaming rooms and the square that defines Monaco — is walkable from all five hotels. Smart-casual dress applies after dark; a jacket is required for the Salons Privés. Each late May, the Formula 1 Grand Prix turns the principality's streets into a circuit, spiking hotel rates and requiring advance booking for anyone visiting that week.
“Monaco is its own country in miniature — the Casino, the harbour and the Grand Prix hairpin all inside a ten-minute walk.”

Getting to Monaco

Fly into Nice Côte d'Azur (NCE) — 30 minutes by car or pre-booked transfer, or 7 minutes by helicopter. The coastal train also connects Nice and Menton to Monaco cheaply. No passport or visa is needed crossing from France; standard Schengen rules apply for arrival into the country.

About 30 minutes by car or pre-booked transfer, or 7 minutes by helicopter. The coastal train and express bus also connect the airport to Monaco.
