Quick answers
- Do you need a ticket?
- Not to walk the site. The plazas, pools and exteriors are free and open. Only the Oceanogràfic, Science Museum and Hemisfèric charge.
- Which is worth paying for?
- The Oceanogràfic, Europe's largest aquarium, if you have children. Otherwise the exteriors and a walk through the Turia gardens are enough.
- How long do you need?
- Ninety minutes for the architecture alone. A full day if you add the Oceanogràfic.
- How far is it from the Costa Blanca?
- Valencia is about 1h45 from Alicante and 2 hours from Benidorm by car, or 1h40 by train.

The free half
The complex sits in the bed of the old Turia river, diverted after the 1957 flood and turned into a nine-kilometre park. Walking between Calatrava's white shells and their reflecting pools costs nothing, and for many visitors that is the whole experience.
Go early or at dusk. The pools are still, the reflections are the point, and the midday sun off that much white concrete is genuinely unpleasant in July.
What is worth a ticket
The Oceanogràfic is the strongest paid attraction — Europe's largest aquarium, with an Arctic section and a dolphinarium, and comfortably a half-day with children.
The Príncipe Felipe Science Museum is hands-on and aimed squarely at families. The Hemisfèric is an IMAX dome; worth it if a film appeals, skippable otherwise.
Valencia beyond the complex
The old city is a 25-minute walk or a short tram ride away, and it is the more interesting half of Valencia — the Mercat Central, the Llotja silk exchange, and the neighbourhood that invented paella.
The Turia gardens connect the two on foot or by bike, which is the pleasant way to do it.
Fitting it into a beach trip
Valencia works as a day trip from the northern Costa Blanca — Benidorm, Altea and Calpe are all within two hours — or as a two-night city stop before moving south.
See the Costa Blanca area guide, or browse member rates on hotels along the coast.
Frequently asked questions
Is the City of Arts and Sciences free?
The outdoor site is free to walk around. The Oceanogràfic, Science Museum and Hemisfèric each require a ticket.
Is it worth visiting without children?
For the architecture, yes — but 90 minutes outdoors rather than a full day of ticketed attractions.
What is the best way to get there from the old town?
Walk or cycle the Turia gardens — about 25 minutes on foot, mostly shaded.
Can I do it as a day trip from Benidorm?
Yes. Around two hours each way by car, or take the train from Alicante for a more relaxed day.
