The Amalfi Coast decoded — Positano, Ravello and Amalfi

The Amalfi Coast is a 30-mile ribbon of cliffside road strung between Naples and Salerno, where towns don't so much sit on the coast as grow out of it — pastel houses stacked up sheer rock, hotel rooms reached by cliff elevators, and beach clubs a vertiginous stone staircase below the nearest piazza. Positano is the vertical postcard everyone already recognizes; Ravello sits far above the water in a world of clifftop gardens and infinity pools; Amalfi anchors the middle with its striped medieval cathedral and the coast's only real working harbor. There's no wrong base here — the question is whether you want Positano's beach-club energy, Ravello's garden calm, or Amalfi's convenience.

Positano vs Ravello vs Amalfi

Positano is the coast's most photographed town — houses cascading down to a single pebble beach, with Le Sirenuse and Il San Pietro as its two defining addresses and Covo dei Saraceni sitting directly on the harbour for a lower-key stay. Ravello, 350 meters above the sea, trades beach access for clifftop gardens — Belmond Hotel Caruso's infinity pool and Palazzo Avino's pink façade both look straight down the coastline rather than out to sea level. Amalfi itself, in between, is the coast's one genuine town — a working harbor, a striped Arab-Norman cathedral, and Hotel Santa Caterina's seaside estate a short walk from the centre.

Getting to the coast

Fly into Naples (NAP), then continue by private transfer or ferry — there is no train along the coast itself, and the single coastal road is narrow, cliff-hugging and slow, especially in summer traffic. Ferries between Naples, Sorrento, Positano and Amalfi are often faster than driving between April and October, when the seasonal boat schedule runs at its fullest.
“There's no train to the Amalfi Coast — the ferry, not the car, is usually the faster way between towns.”

Capri and the coast's rhythm

A day boat to Capri — the Blue Grotto, the Faraglioni rock stacks, the funicular up to the piazzetta — is the classic add-on from any Amalfi Coast base, typically 45 minutes to an hour offshore. Most coast hotels close from November through March; the season runs April to October, with July and August at full capacity and premium pricing.

Domande frequenti

Which Amalfi Coast town should I pick — Positano, Ravello or Amalfi?

+

Positano for the classic vertical-village photo and beach-club scene, Ravello for clifftop gardens and quiet away from sea level, Amalfi for a working town with easy day trips to both.

How do I get to the Amalfi Coast?

+

Fly into Naples (NAP), then take a private transfer or ferry — there's no train along the coast, and the road is narrow and slow, especially in summer.

Are Amalfi Coast hotels open year-round?

+

Most close from November to March. The season runs roughly April through October, with July–August the busiest and priciest months.

Can I day-trip to Capri from the coast?

+

Yes — a day boat from Positano, Amalfi or Sorrento reaches Capri's Blue Grotto and Faraglioni in about 45 minutes to an hour.

Do I need a car on the Amalfi Coast?

+

No — the coast road is slow and parking is scarce. Ferries and pre-booked transfers between towns are usually easier and faster than driving.
