Duomo di Firenze — visit guide

6 min read·July 1, 2026

The Duomo, decoded

Santa Maria del Fiore — Florence's cathedral, universally known as the Duomo — is defined by the dome Filippo Brunelleschi engineered in the 1420s without modern scaffolding or steel, a feat still studied by architects today. Its striped marble façade, matching Baptistery and freestanding bell tower form the single most recognizable skyline in the Renaissance world, and every hotel in the historic centre sits within a short walk of it.

Ideale per

  • ✓Renaissance architecture enthusiasts
  • ✓First-time Florence visitors
  • ✓Travelers willing to climb for a rooftop panorama

Perché alloggiare qui

  • ●Every historic-centre Florence hotel is a short walk from the Piazza del Duomo.
  • ●The dome climb and the Baptistery's gilded doors are two of the Renaissance's defining sights in one square.
  • ●Pairs naturally with the Uffizi Gallery and Ponte Vecchio, both a few minutes' walk away.

Climbing the dome

The climb to the top of Brunelleschi's dome — 463 steps, no elevator — passes between its inner and outer shells before opening onto a 360-degree view over Florence's terracotta rooftops. Tickets are timed and limited daily, so book well ahead, especially in summer.

The Baptistery and Giotto's Campanile

The Baptistery, directly opposite the cathedral's main entrance, holds Lorenzo Ghiberti's gilded bronze doors — nicknamed the Gates of Paradise by Michelangelo. Giotto's Campanile, the freestanding bell tower beside the Duomo, offers an alternative climb with the dome itself visible in the view, rather than from it.
“Climb the Campanile for the classic postcard of the dome — climb the dome itself for the view over everything else.”

Best time to visit

Early morning, before the Piazza del Duomo fills with tour groups, gives the clearest photos of the façade. The dome climb is physically demanding and narrow in places — not recommended for those with mobility concerns or claustrophobia.

Cosa c'è nei dintorni

  • Florence — area guide—On site
  • Ponte Vecchio—10 min walk
  • Uffizi Gallery—10 min walk
  • Val d'Orcia (Tuscany)—90 min by car

Come spostarsi

Fully walkable within Florence's historic centre. Florence airport (Peretola) is about 20 min by car or tram; the train station (Santa Maria Novella) is a 10-minute walk from the Duomo.

Quando visitare

Year-round; early morning avoids the tour-group crush. Book dome-climb tickets well ahead, especially April–June and September–October.
