“What you see is not what you get.”
Unfortunately, my review of this hotel could have been completely different, but I cannot agree with the hotel’s policy of charging the same price for basement rooms as for the other rooms. The basement room is noticeably smaller than the others, and it is not shown in the room photos. Guests staying there are clearly at a disadvantage compared to those staying in the upper-floor rooms. My parents and I were assigned this basement room. It was my parents’ first trip to Amsterdam, so the experience meant a lot to us. I tried to negotiate a room change, especially because a standard room was available both on the day we arrived and the following day. However, the hotel said those rooms had already been promised to guests arriving later and refused to move us. They could simply have moved us for one night and then transferred the incoming guests when they arrived. The difference was only one night. That solution would have made everyone happy, but the hotel showed no flexibility or willingness to handle the situation with care. What made the experience even worse was the attitude of the receptionist. During our conversation, he stood up from his chair, raised his voice, and told me to speak directly to the owner because, according to him, nobody there was offering anything different from what I had paid for. I have stayed in many hotels, and I found his behavior unprofessional and unnecessary. Throughout the entire conversation, I remained calm, polite, and respectful. I even approached him in a friendly manner from the beginning. Even after he raised his voice, I never disrespected him. I simply said that I would speak to the owner, and that is exactly what I did. To make matters worse, the hotel never offered any solution. They insisted that they had provided exactly what I had paid for, which simply was not true. They did not offer any compensation, refund, upgrade, or any gesture of goodwill to acknowledge the situation. Their position was simply that I had to
Being assigned a room that was completely different from the one shown in the photos. Instead of a bright room with a window and a view, we were placed in a basement room with no view at all. This was extremely frustrating, especially because the room was being sold at the same price as the others despite offering a significantly worse experience. I was also very disappointed with the way I was treated by the hotel staff, particularly the receptionist. Instead of trying to understand the situation or offer a reasonable solution, I felt intimidated by his attitude and the way he spoke to me. That lack of professionalism had a major impact on our stay.
