Where to stay in Tuscany

Tuscany — Florence as the smart countryside base

Tuscany's countryside — the Val d'Orcia's cypress-lined hills, Chianti's vineyards, Montalcino's Brunello wine estates — has no standalone hotel inventory in our lineup, and honestly, it doesn't need one. Florence is the region's gateway city, close enough to the countryside that day trips south are entirely realistic, while keeping you inside a walkable Renaissance capital with its own Duomo, Uffizi and Arno riverfront to fill the rest of a stay.

Ideal für

  • ✓Travelers wanting Tuscan countryside without sacrificing a city base
  • ✓Wine-country day-trippers exploring Chianti, Montalcino or the Val d'Orcia
  • ✓Couples combining a Florence city stay with one countryside day trip

Warum hier übernachten

  • ●Florence keeps you inside a walkable Renaissance capital while the countryside is a day trip, not a commitment.
  • ●Chianti, the Val d'Orcia and Montalcino are each reachable in 45 minutes to two hours by car.
  • ●Santa Maria Novella station keeps you connected to Rome and Venice for the rest of an Italy trip.

Why Florence is the smart Tuscan base

Rather than committing to a single countryside estate for the whole trip, basing in Florence — at hotels like Four Seasons Hotel Firenze's walled garden or Villa Cora's Belle Époque hillside villa — gives you a genuine city stay with the flexibility to drive out for a day (or two) among the vineyards, then return to a full range of restaurants, museums and the high-speed rail network.

Chianti, Val d'Orcia and Montalcino as day trips

Chianti's vineyard hills begin within 45 minutes of Florence; the Val d'Orcia's cypress-lined roads and hilltop towns like Pienza are roughly 90 minutes to two hours further south; Montalcino, home to Brunello wine country, sits at the edge of the valley. All three are comfortably reachable as single-day round trips.
“You don't need a countryside hotel to experience Tuscany's hills — you need a car, a day, and Florence as your base.”

Getting around — a car for the hills

A rental car or private driver is essential for exploring Chianti, the Val d'Orcia or Montalcino — there's no practical train or bus network through the countryside itself. Florence's Santa Maria Novella station keeps you connected to Rome and Venice for the rest of an Italy itinerary.

  • Val d'Orcia — visit guide—90 min–2 hr by car
  • Chianti—45 min by car
  • Montalcino—90 min by car

Fortbewegung vor Ort

A rental car or private driver is essential for the countryside — no practical train or bus network reaches Chianti, the Val d'Orcia or Montalcino. Florence itself is fully walkable.

Wann besuchen

Late spring (May–June) and September–October give the best countryside weather for day trips — green hills and wildflowers in spring, harvest and golden light in autumn.

How far are the Tuscan hills from Florence?

+

Chianti begins within 45 minutes; the Val d'Orcia and Montalcino are roughly 90 minutes to two hours further south.

Late spring (May–June) for green hills and wildflowers, or September–October for harvest season and golden light.
